In this lesson plan, ’The Lorax Comes Back’, your students will learn a thinking strategy for forming opinions as they THINK about the reasons and arguments why the Onceler SHOULD be sent to prison as well as reasons and arguments for why he SHOULD NOT. Once they have formed their opinion, they will PLAN & WRITE to the Judge to argue that the Onceler should be sent to prison, or that he should not.
- THINK ON MONDAY: Think deeply in a variety of curriculum and real life contexts as they learn a deep and careful thinking strategy for an important thinking skill. This skill can then be added to their thinking toolkit and applied across a range of other curriculum and real life contexts.
- PLAN ON TUESDAY: Ask questions to plan to write for a specific audience and purpose. These questions are transferrable across all writing tasks and will set them up for success whenever they have to write.
- What is the purpose for writing and who is the audience?
- What structural and language features does this purpose typically have?
- What ideas should I use?
- How will I organise my ideas?
- What vocabulary will I use?
- WRITE ON WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: Experience writing for a real purpose and a specific audience. This makes the task more relevant and meaningful, and equips students with skills and understandings about writing that they will continue to use throughout their lives.
